Forgotten Future
November 30th 2011 12:52
I never really knew who she was. I was too busy keeping my eyes on the open road, ignoring the passing years and relationships strewn along it like roadkill. I never knew who I was either so in some ways we were perfect for each other, except for all the bad stuff. The highway was my elixir and I thought that she was along for the ride.
But I was wrong and bright dreams faded like the summer skies so slowly, shimmering even unto nightfall. I searched for her in every backstreet and parking lot, a lost cause amongst many. I filled the empty space next to me with nothing in particular.
She turned her face away from me, sobbing into the pillow and told the truth in a muffled voice. I let the words drift out of my life, too concerned with the pleasure of being alive to be listening to that kind of thing. Now the truth has pursued me, scratching on motel doors and whispering its simple message on long restless nights. All I can hear is a faint buzzing.
She waits for me at the end of the world, where mountains meet the sea and time sits in a cave and shivers. Who am I to doubt the meaning of all this? We will walk on distant shores, together for the first time and I will never look away into some forgotten future.
