Like Headlights in the Night
July 24th 2008 11:25
As relentless as headlights in the night, her dream unfurled its wings. The sky was hers and all man’s wasted madness of war and might was nothing compared to luscious flight. The wind was her lover and clouds her friend, wheeling and banking in great curves in the night.
Others were there and the apprehension began, and she could not elude the pursuing few. Who were these whistling creatures of the air, who cried to her to come and join the flock?
A shadow fell across her face and cold breath blew away her joy. Something twisted near and screeched a warning in her ear, half formed words that dislodged and fell, never to tell what she should hear.
Then as always, that crazed face drew near and snapped and bit past mortal fear. The dragon in her soul erupted as consciousness wrenched her out of sleep, to hug herself and shake and weep.
